Rody Lopez, "Craft Contemporary: The Future is Handmade."

Location: Pomona College Studio Arts Bldg. Rm. 122

Meet the Executive Director of Los Angeles's Craft Contemporary, Rody Lopez, a 2009 Pomona College graduate AND Rembrandt Scholarship recipent.  "As a museum director, I see firsthand how craft serves as a powerful tool for cultural diplomacy. Craft Contemporary has long recognized that handmade art is more than an object, it is a way of life, a vessel of memory, resilience, hope for the future, and a dialogue across cultures. In a world increasingly shaped by rapid digital interaction, the act of making by hand offers a slow, deliberate form of engagement that nurtures empathy, curiosity, and cross-cultural understanding."

Exquisite Corpse, 2023, acrylic, pastel, and enamel on paper from Steve's Improvisation Series

Associate Director/Registrar of The Benton Museum of Art, Steve Comba, shares the over 40 years of influence and inspiration from his museum career on his own artistic practice. As an artist and museum director, which role has the greater influence? "The 'usual' chronological approach doesn’t interest me so what I’m thinking for this progam is linking my artistic practice to the influence that museum work has had on the development of several bodies of work. [This ranges ] From the first time that I saw the George Inness painting, Medfield Landscape (or Clearing) on my first day working as a graduate student, to the many other opportunities and random chance encounters in other museums (and in other vaults) including the simple influence of travel, not only the broader definition of visiting new places, but the influence of  walking to work over the past 4 decades has had."
